Modern pizza (as we know it today) was born in 1889 when the King and Queen of Italy visited Naples and requested a special dish. A local chef used red tomatoes, white mozzarella cheese, and green basil on pizza dough to recreate the Italian flag.

Mozzarella cheese was originally made from water buffalo milk.

A pizza over 122’ across, covering 11,800 square feet and using almost 4,000 pounds of cheese was made in Norwood, South Africa on December 8th, 1990. It was sliced into 87,550 pieces and fed over 25,000 people.

The largest pizza order was for 13,386 pizzas placed by the VF Corporation in North Carolina for its 40,160 nationwide employees on August 19th, 1998.
